The back of the painting
The artist

Chaim Zins, Jerusalem, 2015

The Back of the Painting: The Artist (Van Gogh 's Self-portrait) stresses the key role of the artist in the creation of his or her artwork. Artists live and work in given environments and they are bound by given human and social conditions. Still, an artwork is the product of the artist's creativity, competence, aesthetic values, ideas, life stance, religious beliefs, political, ideological and ethical positions, and interests. The artist is an inseparable part of the artwork.

The work is composed 2 works: (1) Trompe l'oeil. The Reverse of a Framed Painting, Cornelius Norbertus Gijsbrechts,  1668-1672, National Gallery of Denmark (Statens Museum for Kunst), Copenhagen, Denmark (Oil on canvas, 66.6cm x 86.8cm x 3.7cm). (2) Self-portrait, Vincent van Gogh, 1887, Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, Netherlands (Oil painting, h 42cm × w 34cm × d 8cm).
