Philosophy
of history is
concerned with defining key concepts (e.g., “history,” “fact,”
“progress,” “era,” “historical document,” “historical truth”),
elaborating philosophical standpoints on the history of mankind (e.g.,
history is progressive vs. history is arbitrary), discussing ethical
implications of the past, and establishing the foundations of valid and
reliable researchmethodologies (C. Zins,
2011). |

Rationale Philosopy of history has
two focuses. It explores the philosophical perspectives of the history
of mankind and it establishes the scientific foundations of the
historical sciences.
Four fields. The current state of philosophy of history is confusing. It has two distinct subjects: the history of humankind and the historical sciences. While in practice there is one integrated field under the umbrella name “philosophy of history,” from the theoretical perspective this field is composed of four fields: philosophy of history (history of mankind), philosophy of history (history as an academic field), philosophy of archaeology, and philosophy of genealogy. (C. Zins, 2011). . |
